Start a community
Start the community you wish already existed.
To start a community you need three things: a specific group of people, something they turn up to, and one place that holds both. Just Say Hey is that place — a home page, a member list, events and chat in one app, free to start.
Clubs, groups, member communities, neighbourhood crews. Set up in about five minutes.
- ✓ Set up in minutes
- ✓ Unlimited members on every plan
- ✓ Your brand, not ours
How to start
How to start a community, in three steps
Most communities die of vagueness, not of bad tooling. Be specific about who it's for and when it happens, and the rest follows.
Name it and open the doors
Create your space, add a description and a photo, and you have a joinable home page and invite link. Takes about five minutes.
Invite the first ten
Share the link with the people who already turn up. Ten committed members beats a hundred lurkers — they set the culture everyone else copies.
Put something in the diary
Post a first event with a date. A community is a group of people with a next time; everything else is a mailing list.
A useful test before you launch: can you finish the sentence “we’re the people who ______, and we meet ______”? If you can, you have a community. If you can’t, you have an idea.
What you get
Everything a community needs, in one place
No stitching together a group chat, a spreadsheet, a ticketing site and an Instagram account.
A home page for your group
Your name, your photos, your rules. Members land somewhere that looks like you, not like us.
Events with RSVPs
Post one-offs or recurring events, take RSVPs, send reminders, and see who's actually coming.
Member profiles and a map
Members add what they're into and drop a pin on their suburb — never an address — so you can see where your clusters are.
Group chat and topic groups
One chat for everyone, plus smaller groups for the sub-interests that always emerge.
Introductions that actually happen
New members get nudged towards two or three people they'd genuinely get on with, so week one isn't lonely.
Who's holding it together
See who shows up, who welcomes newcomers, and who's ready for a role — before you burn out doing it all.
Who it’s for
Built for real, in-person groups
If your group meets in a room rather than a feed, this is for you. Communities running on Just Say Hey include:
- Run clubs, walking groups and cycling crews
- Book clubs, film clubs and supper clubs
- Gyms, studios and climbing walls with a regulars crowd
- Cafés, bars and venues with a community night
- Hobby groups, maker spaces and board-game nights
- Neighbourhood, newcomer and expat groups
- Alumni, professional and industry networks
- Faith groups, volunteer groups and not-for-profits
What it costs
Free to start, unlimited members
You can run a whole community without paying us anything. Fees only apply when you monetise — selling tickets or charging membership — and they're a low flat rate in every region.
Starting a community — your questions
How do I start a community from scratch?
Pick one specific thing people can turn up to, set a date, and invite ten people you already know. On Just Say Hey that's: create a space, post an event, share the invite link. The hard part isn't software — it's committing to a repeating time and place, so start there.
What's the best app for running a community?
You want one place that does events, membership and conversation together. Group chats lose your events, event platforms don't know who your members are, and spreadsheets know nothing. Just Say Hey combines all three: a member list, a calendar, and a chat, with the introductions layered on top.
How much does it cost to run a community?
Nothing to start. Every plan includes unlimited members, and you only pay a low flat fee when you actually monetise — selling tickets or charging membership. Paid plans add extras like ticketing tools and analytics.
Can I charge membership fees or sell tickets?
Yes. You can take paid memberships and sell event tickets directly, with payouts to your own account. Pricing and fees are on the pricing page, and there is no fee at all on free events.
How long does setup take?
About five minutes to have a joinable space with a page, an invite link and your first event. Most of the setup that matters — describing who it's for and what happens — is writing, not configuration.
Do I have to do all the work myself?
No, and you shouldn't. You can give members roles, make trusted regulars chapter leaders for their own area, and let members propose their own meetups. The point is that the load spreads instead of sitting on one person.
Your people are already out there. Give them a door.
Create your community free, invite the first ten, and put a date in the diary.
